Chapter Ten

Her captors didn’t let Kenzie sleep long. When another blast of cold water woke her, she realized that a hose in the ceiling had been positioned directly above her head.

“Wake up, Super Freak,” an unknown voice said, reverberating from a speaker in the corner of the room where a CCTV camera lurked. “No sleeping. It’s against the rules.”

Super Freak—how original. Why couldn’t the anti-superhero crowd come up with new insults?

Klon Rae remained quiet, and Kenzie hoped she was asleep. Left alone with her thoughts, she practiced Min-Nal for an indeterminate time, unsurprised when the ancient form failed to calm her mind. Next, she tried to catalog the assorted equipment in the room, some of which she recognized but most of which she didn’t. She had read through some of the articles about Sentinel’s first round of alien kidnappings, and the torture devices in this facility, with their blend of sadistic cruelty and technological innovation, had Nick’s signature all over them.

The water came on twice more that night, and at last Kenzie gave up trying to sleep. Instead, she kept her eyes open and concentrated on the forms of Min-Nal. When that failed yet again, she transported herself someplace nicer—mentally, not physically; even if she could have teleported, she, like Klon Rae, was too depleted by exhaustion and hunger to try. In her mind, she pretended she was back in Vancouver with Ava, sleeping late at Bea’s client’s condo, wandering the city in disguise, preparing meals, showering together… Anytime her thoughts veered toward the X-rated variety, she quickly redirected them. If Klon Rae woke up and tapped into her thoughts, she didn’t want the child to be scarred for life.

Although, now that she thought about it, that risk probably came with the territory of being a telepath.

The only time Kenzie left the room was to be escorted in Vercurium chains to a nearby bathroom where she couldn’t even find the energy to care that a guard made her leave the door open while she relieved herself. By the time Nick returned (the following morning? it had to be), Kenzie’s head felt thick from the combined effects of limited sleep and the drug they had injected her with after her late-night bathroom break.

“We meet again, Galaxy Girl,” Nick drawled as he swept into the room. “Or should I say Kenzie?”

She rolled her eyes, exhaustion lending credibility to her feigned indifference. “Am I supposed to be surprised you know my name?”

Even without super hearing, Kenzie would have heard Nick’s quick intake of breath. But he didn’t say anything as he pulled a stool closer in a movement that reminded Kenzie of Sloane zipping about her lab at Panopticon.

Sloane… She must be out of her mind with worry by now. At least she had Mika and D’aman and the boys to look after her. Kenzie was Ava’s main support system in Seattle. Maybe Beatrice would hear about the situation and fly in to look after Ava. But even if she did, Sloane had better be looking out for Ava, too.
